Het weer was hetzelfde als gisteren, behalve dat het vandaag droog bleef. Al in de middeleeuwen was daar een houten spui sluisje: een zijl of siel. Zo\u2019n deur die bij eb opengaat om het overtollige water uit de polder te lozen en bij opkomend water door de vloedstroom vanzelf gesloten wordt. Geweldig systeem eigenlijk. In de 17e eeuw werd hier een schutsluis gebouwd, die pas in de jaren \u201830 herbouwd en vergroot werd. Tezamen zorgen zij ervoor dat NO Friesland droge voeten houdt. Het uitwateringskanaal loopt door de oude kwelder naar de voormalige lauwerszee. Het is moeilijk voor te stellen dat dit tot 1969 (ik zat in de brugklas) een zeesluis was die het door NW winterstormen opgezweepte hoge water buiten de polder moest houden. Deze terp werd al ruim voor onze jaartelling opgeworpen op een kwelderwal. De kerk uit de 11e eeuw en de huizen er omheen staan dan ook meters boven het omringende maaiveld. Beetje pretentieuze naam (het boek is verplicht leesvoer voor elke wadvaarder!), maar het eten was goed en de bediening uitermate prettig. Aanrader dus! Inmiddels klaart het op en is de wind sterk afgenomen.
