Dag 102: Scarborough dag 2

Morgen trekken we weer verder!

You may be in Brid… And without wifi. But just in case….

You may be going to Grimsby tomorrow. Just a couple of thoughts …. The tides in the Humber (my sailing waters for fifteen years) are extremely strong and you no doubt are well aware that you need to carry the tide with you if you are to make any progress.

The bay at Spurn Point is the obvious place to put the anchor down in northerlies if you run out of tide – but the holding ground is not great and there is often a lot of uncomfortable swell.

A better anchoring spot is at Hawkins Point on the north bank a couple of miles up river – if you can get there. (Anchor as near to the shore as you can get). The holding ground is thick black clay and completely safe (I envy you your electric anchor winch). I anchor there overnight if I am going south to Wells or Lowestoft, and particular if there is any question of a night departure. It saves a few miles.

If you by any chance reach Grimsby before the lock opens, local boats just put their noses in the mud and wait for the tide to rise! No faffing around with anchors! Incidentally it only used to be a tenner (£10) to get an earlier opening. They used to open provided there was enough tide to get to the lock!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the Moors – even if the route finding was more challenging than the map indicated! I am glad you also experienced our British walkers at the end of a good walking day, socks, pints and all! They sounded cheerful.

It was lovely meeting you and indeed I really hope we meet again in the Netherlands. I have mislaid your cards – but I hope this is only temporary!

    Safe voyaging.

      Hi Diana,
Indeed we are well aware of working the right tide on the Humber. When we leave Brid on the ebb just before drying out again, we will reach the fishdock lock shortly before high water.

Excellent! Just what I used to do. Except I used to hope to carry the tide a bit further up river before anchoring overnight when the tide ran out. My tiny marina lay just above the Humber bridge (which is really beautiful!) and you could only get there in one tide provided you reached the mouth of the Humber at low water.

The anchoring advice is just in case the passage from Brid takes longer than expected. And I guess also because I loved sailing on the much under appreciated Humber. So I like to share….
